Conjuntivitis en Perros y Gatos
Conjuntivitis en Perros y Gatos
Conjunctivitis is a condition that is commonly encountered in our pets, and can occur in animals of any age.
This video aims to describe the symptoms and causes of this painful eye condition as well as the available treatment options.
What is Conjunctivitis?
The word Conjunctivitis means inflammation of the conjunctival membranes of the eye, which are the pink membranes that line the inner aspect of the eyelids and loosely cover the whites of the eyes.
Common symptoms include ocular:
- Discomfort
- Irritation
- Discharge (from watery to thick pus and mucus)
- Redness
Important notes:
Some parts of the eye are usually much more red than others, and this does not necessarily mean your pet has conjunctivitis:
- Front part of the third eyelid is usually quite red
- Membranes over the white of the eye are usually pale pink
There are other conditions that may cause a red eye:
- These require medical attention as well
- Consult your vet if your pet’s eyes look inflamed
What Causes Conjunctivitis?
There are many causes of conjunctivitis in our pets. These include:
- Bacterial infections
- Viral infections
- Irritants like dust, smoke or chemicals
- Allergies
- Mechanical irritation from eyelid problems or hair around the eyes
- Problems with tear production: “Dry Eye”
It is worth noting that most infectious causes of conjunctivitis are species specific:
- Not readily transmitted between people and animals
- It is still important to practice good hygiene when manipulating your pets
How do we treat conjunctivitis?
This depends on exactly what is causing the disease:
- Surgery for mechanical irritation from an eyelid or hair
- Specific drops/ointments for most cases of conjunctivitis
Most cases of conjunctivitis, or any red eye, requires prompt medical attention. Always consult your vet if you suspect a problem and be careful to use any home remedies, as some of these can do more harm than good.
Glaucoma: Una Penosa Enfermedad Ocular
There are various forms of glaucoma that can affect our pets, and the most common forms in pets are not the same as the human form of the disease. However, just like in people, glaucoma in pets result in increased pressure inside the affected eye.
The pressure inside a normal eye
The eye ball is a fibrous structure that maintains its spherical shape by a very well controlled mechanism of fluid production and circulation inside the eye. In order to maintain a steady pressure and normal shape, the fluid produced inside the eye must also drain out of the eye at exactly the same rate at which it is produced.
The fluid, or aqueous humor as it is known, is produced by a structure inside the eye called the ciliary body. From here it circulates through the pupil into the front part of the eye, and then drains into a specialised network of openings located at the point where the transparent front of the eye, the cornea, meets the white of the eye, the sclera.
The situation in an eye affected with glaucoma
For the eye to function normally, the rate at which the fluid is produced, must be matched by the rate at which fluid drains out of the eye. Think of it like a tap that is dripping water into a basin at the same rate at which the water is draining out of the plug. If the plug gets blocked up, more water will come into the basin than water draining out. Eventually the basin overflows.
Because the eye is a closed structure, fluid cannot overflow and as a result pressure builds up. It is this rise in pressure that is responsible for the pain experienced by animals (and people) with glaucoma.
What causes glaucoma?
There are many causes for glaucoma, but they all result in:
* Decreased drainage of fluid from the eye
* Never excessive production of fluid
Some dogs are genetically predisposed to glaucoma:
The structure of the eye is abnormal and prevents proper drainage of the fluid. Although born with the abnormality, the disease will often only become apparent in middle to old age.
Affected breeds include:
* American Cocker Spaniels
* Chows
* Basset hounds
* Shar Peis
* Arctic breeds such as the Husky
In most other animals, glaucoma develops as a result of some other disease or problem in the eye:
* Infection
* Inflammation
* Loose lens
What are the symptoms of glaucoma?
Well the high pressure in the eye will cause a few things to happen:
* Painful eye
* Redness
* Cloudy cornea and enlarged globe
It is important to note that other diseases can also cause these clinical signs, and it is therefore very important to take your dog to a vet as soon as possible so that they can measure the pressure inside the eye to determine if it is glaucoma or not. Either way, a red painful eye needs treatment.
It is important to seek treatment from your vet immediately if you suspect that your pet may have glaucoma, because it can cause blindness quite rapidly if not treated immediately.
How is glaucoma treated?
There are various drugs and surgical treatment options to try and control glaucoma.
They all work by either reducing the amount of fluid produced by the eye, or improving the outflow of fluid from the eye.
Reparación Quirurgica de Una Pierna Fracturada en un Perro
When a dog or a cat fractures a leg, it is necessary to operate. The aim of such a procedure is to reduce and stabilise the fracture.
This quickly reduces the pain endured by the patient and allows healing without sequel. This video will take you through all the stages of the surgical repair of a fractured front leg in a dog.
Pre-operative x-rays allow visualisation of the fracture line. The decision is made to plate the broken bones.
Bone and joint infections can be very difficult to treat. It is therefore very important to take every possible step to ensure sterility:
- The leg is clipped entirely and scrubbed thoroughly with a powerful antiseptic solution.
- The muscles around the fractured leg are carefully dissected
- The fracture line can be visualised and an adequate plate selected
- A hole is drilled through the bone, on one extremity of the plate
- Taping of the hole is necessary
- The first screw can then be screwed in
- The same process is repeated for the other screws, beginning with the other extremity of the plate
- This is the result after implantation of all the screws
- Following stitching up of the tissues and skin around the bone, an x-ray is taken and the patient is woken up.
- The x-ray provides confirmation of the nice fracture reduction
Follow up x-rays, under sedation, should be taken every 4 to 6 weeks following the operation. Whenever a nice callus has developed, the plate should be removed under general anaesthetic.

Reparación Quirurgica de el Pie Fracturado de un Perro
A fractured foot is a common injury of dogs and cats. This video will take you through all the stages of the surgical repair of a fractured foot in a dog from the decision making to the end of the surgery.
Do we need to surgically repair fractured digits?
To immobilise the fractured foot for 6 weeks in a splinted bandage is usually curative in a young and healthy animal. However, it could be very advantageous to get your pet operated:
- Shorter recovery period
- Pain free quickly after the operation
- Adequate healing without sequel
The decision to operate depends also on which digit is fractured. There are 5 digits named 1 (dew claw) to 5 (outside digit). The digits 3 and 4 do carry most of the weight of the animal. Whenever any of those is affected, surgery is indicated.
![]()
In the present case, digits 2, 3, 4 and 5 being broken, the decision was easily reached.
![]()
The various stages of the surgery
- Careful dissection of the nerves, tendons and blood vessels around the broken digits.
- Visualisation of the fractured digits
- A pin is inserted in the bottom fragment of the broken digit
- Result after pinning of the 4 bottom fragments
- The pins are then inserted in the top fragments
- This is the result when all 4 pins are in place
- The pins are cut so that half an inch sticks out
- The end bit of the pins are turned upwards to avoid interfering with the joint in front
- The pin can be cut to their final length and the pinning is complete
- Following stitching of the skin, the dog is woken up and an x-ray is taken to check the repair. In that case, it looked very successful
